Which order to do them in
Vesuvius in the morning, Herculaneum in the afternoon. The crater often clouds over after midday, and with wind the summit runs several degrees colder than the coast.
- Shuttle or taxi from Ercolano Scavi up to the 1,000-metre car park.
- The final stretch is on foot only: a wide gravel path with no exposed sections.
- Back down and into the excavations with at least two hours before last admission.
What to bring
- Closed shoes with grip: loose lava slides
- A windproof layer, even in summer
- Water: there's a single refreshment point on the path
- Hat and sunglasses: there is no shade at the top
